In the New York Times opinion article titled "Don't Arm Ukraine", John J. Mearsheimer discusses what a bad idea it would be if the United States supplied Ukraine with weapons.
First, Mearsheimer explains that the Ukraine crisis has been going on for about a year and that Russia is winning. Next, he says that there are many people in the U.S. who want to arm Ukraine and even the nominee for secretary of defense supports the idea. However. Mearsheimer feels that these people are wrong because if the United States sends weapons to Ukraine, it will cause problems for both countries. Since Ukraine is badly outgunned, the U.S. will have to send a lot of weapons, but the fighting will only escalate. Mearseimer also acknowledges that there are those who think that if the cost of fighting rises, then Russia is sure to stop. But Mearseimmer says that they are wrong because the "Russian leaders believe their countries core strategic interests are at stake in Ukraine; they are unlikely to give ground, even if it means absorbing huge costs." Mearsiemer believes that the only solution is to make Ukraine a neutral country in a diplomatic manner.
